For salt chlorine generator pools

Very Low

Typical Range: 3,000 - 3,400 ppm

Salt level requirements vary by generator. Check your owner's manual for the recommended range. Too little salt = low chlorine output. Too much = potential equipment damage.

Tips

83 lbs per 10,000 gallons raises salt by 1000 ppm

Broadcast salt around pool with pump running

Wait 24 hours for salt to fully dissolve before retesting

Approximately 3 x 40lb bags needed

Use Pool-Grade Salt Only
Use only salt specifically designed for pool use. Table salt and rock salt may contain additives that can stain your pool or damage equipment.

About Salt Chlorine Generators

Salt chlorine generators (SWG) convert salt into chlorine through electrolysis. Despite the name, salt pools aren't "chlorine-free" - they generate chlorine on-site. Most systems require 2700-3400 ppm salt, much lower than ocean water (35,000 ppm).

Why Salt Level Matters

Too low: Generator can't produce enough chlorine, may show low salt error.
Too high: Can damage the salt cell, cause over-chlorination, corrosion.

Using the Right Salt

Always use pool-grade salt (sodium chloride). Avoid table salt, rock salt, or water softener salt as they may contain additives that can stain your pool or damage equipment. Look for 99.4% pure or higher.
